New players will compete with traditional OEMs due to low barriers to entry in the electric truck space

DUBLIN, January 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The “European Medium-duty and Heavy-duty Electric Trucks Growth Opportunities” report has been added to from ResearchAndMarkets.com offer.

Around the world, countries are moving towards a low-carbon economy. In Europe, the transition to zero-emission vehicles is an important part of the low-emission mobility strategy. Municipal governments and local authorities are playing a central role in this transition by providing incentives for low-emission vehicles and deploying charging infrastructure.

Electric vehicles are gaining traction as part of this shift, with rapid penetration expected beyond 2025 as the market matures for EV adoption and more EVs become available for commercial sale. In Europebattery electric trucks in the medium (MD) and heavy (HD) segments will reach 28,648 and 160,561 units respectively by 2030. Penetration of battery electric trucks will be highest in Germanywith 48.2% in the MD segment and 43% in the HD segment.

Government incentives and programs, such as the Electromobility Directive in Germanyfinancing of electric charging in Franceand the incentive program for efficient and sustainable mobility (MOVES) II in Spainwill drive electrification and the growth of charging infrastructure.

OEMs are focusing on urban distribution, waste, and regional transportation as strong use cases for electrification. Energy density and battery life are expected to increase even as costs decline with the likely commercialization of solid-state lithium and lithium-sulfur technology after 2027. Fuel cell technology gradually improves in terms of power density and durability. The gradual extension of emission-free zones in cities and the banning of diesel vehicles in Europe will affect diesel trucks in the future.

Fluctuating crude oil prices and lower maintenance costs will strongly favor the total cost of ownership of electric trucks, as battery prices are expected to drop significantly after 2025. Lower cost of ownership with attractive leasing options for batteries and trucks and better access to charging infrastructure will encourage small fleets to switch to electric vehicles.

The study also provides a total cost of ownership analysis to examine the effect of these factors on the MD and HD electric segments.

The study covers the commercial vehicle (CV) market in the following sectors:

  • MD CV: gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) from 6 to 16 tonnes
